About our Instructors
Sensei Kath Perry
Black Belt 4th Dan - Senior Instructor
Welcome to St Margaret’s Ken Yu Kai. I am very proud of our club. Having opened early in November 2012, I have to say that the response from St. Margaret's’ families has been amazing. I opened the club because I believed that karate could have a very positive effect our children as it has had on me and my family.
I started karate in 2002 (quite late in karate life!). As a parent you often try different sports for your children. One day I was exploring the clubs that Failsworth Sports Centre had to offer and by total chance we walked into a karate class lead by Sensei Terry Pottage (then 7th Dan).
My children started to train with Sensei Terry. I was a new head teacher at the time and I used the opportunity to do my school work while they trained. I soon began to realise that my perspective was wrong. In September 2002 Sensei Terry ‘dared me’ to get up and learn karate. I did. I have never looked back.
I won my black belt in May 2006 and I am now a 4th Dan. I often compete in the Ken Yu Kai Open and National Competitions and I am a Ken Yu Kai Referee. Karate complements my work as a head teacher. It gives me focus and a healthy attitude to life. My karate friends are a fantastic support to me.
My first adventure as an instructor was at Ken Yu Kai Blackley in February 2012. I love this club. The venue is at The Body Matrix Gym - a good old fashioned place. The students are from a range of backgrounds and different schools. As an instructor I love watching them change and grow as young people in a really positive way as a result of karate.
St. Margaret’s Ken Yu Kai is a growing club and the message it gives to students is the same that Sensei Terry has given to students for over 35 years. It reflects the ethos of every part of school life – hard work; within a supportive environment. It caters for primarily for St. Margaret’s pupils, past, present and their parents.
St Margaret’s Ken Yu Kai club is both a great place to train and I am very proud of us all.

Sensei Louisa Murphy
Black Belt 2nd Dan - Instructor I began training 10 years ago, when my eldest daughter started to traing. I quickly became hooked. Now both my daugthers train and teach at our club too. I steadily rose through my grades, achieving my 1st Dan in October 2015 and my 2nd Dan in October 2019. I love being a part of St Margaret's Ken Yu Kai and enjoy seeing all our student progress in confidence and ability as well as through their grades. Karate is a fantastic sport and is great for people of all ages for fitness, concentration and discipline. I have met some great people through Ken Yu Kai and am proud to say I am a part the wider Ken Yu Kai family. |
